Casino complaints and ADR: how to escalate a dispute in Britain
A practical guide to formal casino complaints, deadlock letters and the limits of independent dispute resolution.
A support conversation can end without resolving the problem you raised. If you disagree with a casino about a gambling transaction, find its formal complaints procedure before sending another message to live chat. You need a record of what you are disputing and how the business has responded.
This casino complaint ADR guide is for adults aged 18 and over dealing with gambling businesses licensed by the Gambling Commission in Great Britain. Do not assume the same process covers an overseas operator or every gambling dispute elsewhere in the UK. It is general information, not legal advice or a promise that money will be returned.
How to complain about a casino
The Gambling Commission tells customers to complain directly to the gambling business first and follow its complaints policy. Check the terms linked to your account or transaction, then use the contact route given in that policy.
Explain the disputed event in chronological order. Include the relevant dates, times and amounts, along with evidence supporting your account. The Commission also advises keeping copies of everything you send. If you already contacted support, include the conversation reference rather than assuming the complaints team can identify it.
State the outcome you are asking for. That could be a written explanation of a decision or a review of a disputed transaction. Keep your request separate from what you can prove: a balance screenshot records what was displayed, but it does not by itself establish why the business made a later decision.
When the eight-week complaints period ends
The business has eight weeks from receiving your complaint to resolve it, according to the Commission’s consumer guidance. Its guidance for operators says the entire internal process, including escalation within the business, must take no longer than eight weeks from initial receipt.
That distinction matters if you are passed between departments. Keep the original submission and acknowledgement so that you have evidence of when the complaint reached the business. Ask for confirmation if a support exchange has not clearly been recorded as a formal complaint.
The process can also end sooner if you and the business reach a deadlock or final position. The operator guidance says the closing letter should explain the final decision and how to escalate to an independent ADR entity. Eight weeks is not a guaranteed payment deadline or an estimate of how long ADR itself will take.
What a casino deadlock letter means
A deadlock letter is usually issued at the conclusion of a complaint and gives information about referring the dispute to an Alternative Dispute Resolution provider. It records the end of the operator’s process. It does not establish that either side is right.
Read the referral instructions and keep the complete letter. The gambling business should tell you which ADR provider to use and provide its contact details. Do not pick an unrelated service just because it appears in search results.
If the business says its decision is final but gives no referral details, ask for those details in writing. Explain when you first complained and attach the final response rather than restarting the whole account of events.
Prepare evidence the ADR provider can follow
ADR is a free, independent service. You must first go through the gambling business’s own complaints procedure, and the provider decides whether it can adjudicate your complaint after considering the information you submit.
A useful submission file can contain:
| Record | Why include it? |
|---|---|
| Original complaint and acknowledgement | Shows the issue raised and when the business received it |
| Final response or deadlock letter | Records the operator’s position and referral instructions |
| Relevant transaction records | Identifies the amounts and events in dispute |
| Applicable terms and dated correspondence | Lets the reviewer connect the decision to the written rules and explanations |
This is an editorial filing checklist, not a replacement for the provider’s own form or evidence requirements. Our guide to keeping a dated record of casino terms covers organising the underlying documents. Submit sensitive account information only through the provider’s verified submission route, not in a public complaint post.

Editorial filing checklist. Provider requirements take priority.
ADR does not cover every disagreement
The Commission says ADR providers will not accept complaints about customer service issues, refusal to accept a bet or refusal of your custom. A complaint about an unanswered message is therefore not automatically the same as a dispute about a gambling transaction.
Describe the actual disputed transaction, if there is one, without relabelling a service complaint to force it into the process. The provider determines whether your case falls within its scope. If it accepts the complaint, it contacts the business and starts adjudication.
After you submit the complaint
Keep the submission confirmation and follow the provider’s instructions. If no acknowledgement arrives, the Commission recommends checking your email junk folder and contacting the ADR provider if you still cannot find a response.
If you disagree with the final adjudication, ask whether the provider has an appeals procedure. The Commission notes that an appeal may be available and that the provider should explain the grounds and time limits. It recommends independent legal advice before deciding to take the case to the small claims court.
You do not need to keep gambling while a complaint is considered. Avoid making further deposits to recover the disputed amount. Keep your complaint reference, preserve the evidence and use the next step set out in the written response.
