Slot paytable explained: read the rules before the reels

A practical guide to reading the rules behind slot symbols and payouts, with a worked reading example and clear limits on what RTP tells you.

A slot paytable explained properly should answer a small, practical question: what would have to happen for this particular game to pay, and what does the displayed prize refer to? Start with the rules inside the game, rather than a picture of its biggest possible win.

For adults in Great Britain, the Gambling Commission’s rules on game information require applicable rules to be easily available before a customer commits to gamble. Reading them is a reason to pause, not a reason to place a bet. This guide explains how to organise that reading; it does not recommend a casino or a game.

How to read a slot paytable without guessing

Open the game’s information or help menu and work through every relevant page. Do not stop at the symbol chart. The Commission’s RTS 3 guidance covers winning outcomes, restrictions and feature rules as well as the way prizes are determined. Its scope is the regulated requirements it describes, not a promise about every website accessible from Britain.

Use these headings for your own notes:

  • Bet basis: what stake or unit does the displayed payout refer to?
  • Winning pattern: which positions count, and in which direction?
  • Special symbols: what changes when a wild or scatter appears?
  • Limits: what restrictions apply to the game or its features?

If you cannot answer one of these questions from the current rules, leave it unresolved. Guessing from a similar-looking game is a poor substitute for an explanation. Ask for the exact rule, or leave the game alone.

Use the paytable headings as questions to check in the game rules.

Check what the displayed prize is based on

A useful example comes from Greentube’s published Super Scatter X help. That document says its symbol payouts change with the selected bet and that the paytable displays prizes for the current bet and number of lines.

The reading lesson is to establish the basis before interpreting an amount. A screenshot detached from its bet setting leaves out part of the information. Do not increase a stake to investigate a payout; use the help text and ask support if the display is unclear.

This is an example from a particular published game document, not confirmation that this version is available or authorised for you. We have not played or tested it, and its other features should not be assumed to apply to a British game offering.

Read the winning pattern and symbol exceptions together

In the same Greentube document, ordinary line wins run consecutively from the leftmost reel on selected lines, while scatters pay regardless of position. It also describes a wild substitution exception for scatter symbols. Those qualifications matter: recognising a familiar symbol does not tell you the whole rule.

Read the symbol description beside the winning-pattern instructions. Keep separate notes for the base game and any feature whose behaviour changes. Apply only the rules of the version you actually have open, not the example above. The manufacturer’s game help illustrates why a symbol chart alone is insufficient.

What a paytable cannot tell you about your session

A list of possible payouts is not a forecast of what you will receive. The Commission’s explanation of return to player describes RTP as an average over many plays, not an amount returned each time a machine is played. It also explains that previous wins or losses do not change the odds of the next game on a random machine.

Keep that distinction when reading a slot paytable. A large prize on the screen does not make it likely, and an RTP percentage does not promise a particular session result. Neither is a reason to continue after losing money.

Keep game rules separate from bonus conditions

Use the paytable to understand the game, then read any separate offer conditions on their own terms. For that different task, our guide to wagering requirements explains the bonus terminology. Do not treat a game-help page as an answer to an account or promotional question it does not address.

This material is for adults aged 18 and over. You can finish reading and choose not to gamble. Never use money needed for essentials or chase losses. If gambling is causing concern, GamCare’s support options provide a place to seek help.
